Walkies! Dogs saving the planet one walk at a time

We thought readers could do with a feel-good news story. It should be especially touching for our dog and nature-loving readers

Man’s best friend is playing an unexpected role in the revitalisation of woodland in Lewes, thanks to an innovative project led by Wilderlife, an environmental organisation. In collaboration with Dylan Walker, they’ve found a unique way to engage dog walkers and harness their pets’ instincts to help restore degraded habitats.

Funded by the National Lottery through the Ouse Valley Climate Action project, this initiative involved mimicking the actions of lost species like beavers, wild boar, and wolves. While the “beaver coppicing” opened up the canopy and “boar rootling” improved soil conditions, it was the “wolf reseeding” that truly captured the community’s attention.

By encouraging dogs to wear special seed harnesses on walks, Wilderlife transformed a potential issue – dogs dispersing seeds – into an ecological asset. While initial germination rates were moderate, the team remains confident that the seeds will gradually take root and contribute to the woodland’s rejuvenation.

The project’s impact is already visible. The previously bare woodland floor now boasts light-filled clearings and pathways. Insect life is thriving, and wildflowers and grasses are beginning to emerge. Wilderlife is eager to share its successes with other local green spaces and invites further collaboration and idea exchange.

This heartwarming story underscores the power of community involvement in conservation efforts. It also demonstrates the potential for creative solutions to environmental challenges, turning everyday activities into opportunities for ecological restoration. Wilderlife’s innovative approach serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that even our furry friends can contribute to a healthier planet.

If you have a positive story to share about your personal successes or what’s happening in your community, we encourage you to get in touch and spread the good news! We could all do with some.
