It’s summer and while the sun may not always be shining, why confine yourself to a stuffy office even on those overcast days? Transform your garden, patio, deck or balcony into a productive and inspiring workspace with these budget-friendly tips, inspired by lifestyle expert Evette Rios and her segment on America’s The Today Show.

1. Choose Your Spot:

According to Rios, “Find a shady spot or create shade with an umbrella or canopy.” The right location will make your outdoor office comfortable and functional. Consider factors like proximity to power outlets, Wi-Fi signal strength, and privacy. However, if you are finding every spot puts glare on your laptop, there are options. There are anti-glare screen protectors and sunshades. For a touch of ambience, hang string lights or lanterns if you work in the early evenings. Consider adding a small water feature for a soothing background sound.

2. Essential Furniture:

Forget expensive patio sets. Upcycle old furniture with a fresh coat of paint or weatherproof stain. A small dining table and a comfortable chair are all you need to get started. Foldable camp tables are also a good idea as they will be the correct height and can be put away quickly. Add cushions and throws for extra comfort and style and when it gets cooler in the shade.

3. Organisation and Storage:

A rolling cart can be a versatile storage solution, easily moved indoors when not in use. You can also look for garden tables that also act as storage boxes to keep everyday office items like notepads and pens.

4. Power and Connectivity:

If you need to plug in your laptop or other devices, invest in a weatherproof extension cord or power strip. Ensure a strong Wi-Fi signal for uninterrupted work. There are boosters you can purchase when you step further out into the garden. If you want to listen to the news or music, consider portable Wi-Fi speakers.

5. Personal Touches:

Add your personal flair to your outdoor office with plants, flowers, and decorative items. A small rug can define the space and add a pop of colour. As The Today Show suggests, “Bring the indoors out with decorative pillows, throws, and outdoor rugs.”

6. Stay Hydrated and Protected:

Keep a water bottle handy to stay hydrated throughout the day. Apply sunscreen regularly, even in the shade, to protect your skin.

7. Enjoy the Benefits:

Working outdoors has numerous benefits, including increased creativity, reduced stress, and improved mood. Embrace the fresh air and natural light while getting your work done. Invite fellow freelancers so you can all enjoy your new outdoor oasis.

By following these simple and affordable tips, you can create a beautiful and functional outdoor office space that will inspire and motivate you. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can transform your backyard into a productive oasis without breaking the bank.

Being outside is the best part of the summer and working on the patio is such a pleasant moment. For me, the most important thing is a comfortable chair to enjoy being outside and concentrate on my work. I have a cozy sectional (like this https://wickerpark.ca/collections/lovett-vive-collection-all-weather-round-grey-wicker) with enough space to work comfortably, and I use my side table as a work desk, which is more than enough to create an incredible work environment.
